Dear Members and Friends. What a great weekend it was for the East Coast Eagles at Henson Park last weekend. Our Premier Cup U/18's kicked off the weekend on Saturday morning with a gutsy 4-point victory over arch rivals Pennant Hills. Then the Premier Division Seniors earned their passage through to the semi-finals with a hard fought win against reigning premiers North Shore.
2008 Team of the Year Dinner
Last Wednesday the Club was well represented at the 2008 Team of the Year function at Club Swans. Congratulations to our players who represented the Club during the year:
U/23 Development Team - Phill Entwisle, Ben Rogers, Luke Stanford Sydney AFL Rep Team - Phill Entwisle, Ben Rogers, Luke Stanford, Jon Vlatko, Jason Coulloupas, Shane Ryan
Congratulations also to Damien Bowles who was named at Full Back in the Sydney AFL Team of the Year. Damien was the Club's only selection after a very consistent maiden year.
2008 Howarth Medal
A big congratulations must also go to Phill Entwisle who was awarded the inaugural Howarth Medal for the Representative Player of the Year. Phill excelled in both the U/23 Development game and the Sydney AFL Rep Game and was also awarded the Players' Player in the latter. Phill received his award from Barnaby Howarth following an emotional speech detailing Barney's recovery from a stroke 2 years ago.
Trent Stubbs
U/18 Premier Cup player Trent Stubbs has been named in the AFL's 30-man AIS Squad representing the best young players from around the country. The 2008 squad includes eight players from metropolitan Victoria, six Tasmanians, three each from country Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and New South Wales/ACT and two each from Queensland and the Northern Territory. A key component of the NAB AFL Rising Stars Program, the academy provides the players with the opportunity to undertake an intensive 12-month training program. We congratulate Trent on his selection and look forward to watching his development in the coming years. Premiership Pledge The East Coast Eagles have launched their 2008 Premiership Pledge across all 3 grades. We encourage all Members and Supporters to log on to www.eastcoasteagles.com.au and pledge an amount of money to the club should either the U/18 Premier Cup, Reserve Grade or First Grade sides win the Premiership in 2008. You can chose to nominate a side if you wish and the Club sincerely thanks you for your generosity.
Raffle The Club has one more fundraising drive remaining for 2008 - a Club Raffle. Some great prizes are on offer including an Apple iPhone and a set of golf clubs. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased from the players. All prizes will be drawn on Club Champion Night - Friday 31 October at the Castle Hill RSL. Doug Sholz Benefit Night
A Benefit night for the Doug Scholz family will be held on Friday September 5th at St Joseph's College in Hunters Hill. Start time is 7.30pm Cost is $100 which includes food, drinks, prizes and entertainment. There is also an auction as part of the proceedings. If you wish to attend please see Anthony Dignan for tickets. Tickets must be pre-purchased before the night. Please phone Anthony on 0433 824455 if you have any enquiries about the night. Doug made an enormous contribution to our Club so it would be great to see as many Members and supporters there as possible. U/18 Premier Cup What a terrific start the U/18's have made to their finals campaign. In glorious spring conditions on Saturday morning Peter Steer's chargers stood firm to record a 4 point victory over Pennant Hills. The Eagles led at every change and made the most of a good start to win 10.10.70 to 10.6.66. It was sensational to see so many East Coast supporters turn out to cheer on the 18's and I'm sure this played in a part in the victory. The team will need the same support this Saturday as they travel to North Dalton Park in Wollongong to take on minor premiers North Shore for a place in the 2008 Grand Final. Once again the match will start at 9.45am.
Premier Division Reserves After a well earned rest our reserve grade face another tough test against Pennant Hills this Saturday with the winner advancing to the Grand Final. Penno had a big win over UNSW-ES last weekend. The match will also take place at North Dalton Park in Wollongong commencing at 12.00pm
Premier Division Seniors Our First Grade side has also marched into the Semi-Finals with a convincing 50 point win over North Shore 22.10.142 to 14.8.92. The team now face St George on Sunday afternoon at Henson Park in another do or die game. St George were convincingly beaten by Pennant Hills in the Qualifying Final last Saturday and the First Grade side will be out to avenge the recent 4 point loss to the Crows in Round 14.
It's shaping up as another fantastic weekend of action and we will once again need all supporters to attend the games in their droves cheering for the Eagles.
Looking forward to seeing you at the footy. Gus Seebeck

The East Coast Eagles football club has created history in season 2008, where for the first time ever in its short history all three grades will play finals. It is great achievement by all coaches and players and is a reward for all the hard work of many people from the Eagles' club.
Even though this is a great achievement I am sure that all teams would like to make that history greater by taking out their respective competitions. By making the finals all three teams have given themselves that opportunity and now it is up to every player to take the opportunity and run with it. It would be history in the making for the seniors if they could achieve what no other Eagles team has been able to do and that is winning a senior premiership. After a comfortable 90 point win (20.17 137 to 5.17 47) against Western Suburbs on the weekend the Eagles will now look forward to the challenge of taking on last year's Premiers North Shore in the Elimination final. The Eagles know that to continue the dream they must now play at a new level and work as hard as they have worked all season. Damien Bowles was a driving force on the weekend and he will be needed to set up the play against the Bombers as he did on Saturday. Adam Floyd played his best game for the season and will need to take that form into the final series. Shane Ryan bounced back with an impressive display. Ryan Smyth also returned to good form with four goals and a good all round performance. With a few players due back from injury for the finals it is a pleasant headache for Coach Glenn Garner to have, even though some players will be unlucky to miss out. |

The East Coast Eagles faced the reigning premier, North Shore, in the Elimination Final on Sunday and with a spot in week two up for grabs against St George, it promised to be a tough encounter with the Bombers who were coming off five wins in a row.
With cyclone Gustav creating havoc in the United States it was a sign of things to come when the Eagles own cyclone Gus Seebeck marked and goaled in the opening minutes of the first term. Three quick goals followed and before you could blink the Eagles were four goals in front. However the young Bombers were not going to give up the season without a fight and at quarter time it was the Eagles by just three points in what was looming as a very high scoring affair.
The second quarter was much of the same with Ed Wilson and Anthony Stubbs controlling the ruck and Seebeck adding further goals, but the Eagles drew away as the rain started to tumble to hold a handy 25 point lead at half time
The 3rd quarter saw the Eagles start well with Rowan Bilkey and Luke Stanford providing great rebound across half back and the Eagles look set to continue into week 2 but the Bombers came back and at the last break it was only 24 points the difference and the Eagles would need to start well early in the final term.
After a lengthy injury delay early in the final quarter the Eagles goaled after the resumption and as Floyd picked up his 5th goal and Seebeck finishing with a bag of eight, the Eagles were still alive and looking forward to another battle with St George.
The Eagles ran out winners 22.10 (142) to the Bombers 14.8 (92).
The Premier Cup under 18’s kicked off the first week of finals as underdogs against arch rivals Pennant Hills. With the sun shining the young Eagles started like a team who was just waiting for the finals to arrive to show how well they could perform on the big stage.
Running in numbers, tackling and constant pressure saw the Eagles take an 11 point lead into quarter time.
The second quarter saw both sides fighting to gain the upper hand but with Trent Stubbs and James Collis getting plenty of the ball the Eagles steadied to hold a 10 point lead at half time.

Congratulations to Rowan and Sarah Bilkey who on Friday August 15th at 4.25pm welcomed Thomas Raymond Bilkey into the world and of course the East Coast Eagles Family. After leaving selections early on Thursday evening, Rowan joined Sarah for a trouble free labour and delivery. Thomas weighed in at a healthy 3.15kg or 6lb 15oz and 48.5cm long. Both mother and son are in perfect health. Thanks to Sarah's well timed delivery, Bilks was available to play on Sunday against Pennant Hills and we are told that Tom will hopefully make his debut appearance at the footy this weekend against Wests. Congratulations and good luck to the Bilkey Family. |
