Jason Duss 2008 Grand Final400 Club games for Jason Duss ... still ticking over like a Swiss watch

The new kid at training looked around at all the other boys on the field. He could see and hear them, but he couldn’t understand them. He didn’t know the rules, but figured that because the best players always had the football, then he’d better go in and get it. Thus began the AFL career of Jason Duss.

It was 1987 and the Duss family, comprising of Dad Thomas, Mum Denise, brother Kevin and eight year old Jason had arrived in Australia ready to start a new life in their chosen country. Jay (as his lovely wife Liz chooses to call him) could not speak a word of English having been born in Basel, Switzerland where Swiss-German was his native tongue. Together with Kev, Dussy (as those at the footy club call him) attended Castle Hill Primary School where he enrolled in ESL (English as a Second Language) classes to get him up to speed with his school mates. It didn’t take too long before Jason (as his mother calls him) was chattering away at the pace of delivery that we all must endure today!

Driving home with Mum from school one day, Dussy and his first Aussie mate Ben Jones passed the Castle Hill Showground where they saw some kids running around kicking footballs. They of course were the U/9’s from the Baulkham Hills Junior AFL Club and it was then he knew he wanted to be part of that scene. Soccer had been the ball sport in Switzerland, but he knew instantly that he wanted to play that game with the funny shaped footy. With no Auskick in those days, he became a member of the U/9 Hawks, with Chris Sharpe as his first coach. “I loved Sharpey” said Dussy. “Without doubt, he influenced and shaped my career and was a major reason for me achieving these 400 Club games.”

In the 1991 BHAFC Annual Report, Chris wrote, “Another one of the mosquito fleet with a ton of ability, Jason not only improved his skills this year, but also his ability to read the game. This made him even more valuable on the wing as he not only provided attacking opportunities, but also added strength to the defence. He has great skills on either side of his body and some of his efforts to get the ball were inspirational.”

In between getting a grasp of the language, learning the rules of the game and establishing his position in the schoolyard, Dussy began to love life in Australia. With his parents supporting him to the hilt he played his 100th game in the last round of 1993 and had already tasted what would prove to be a long period of representative footy for the Hills Hornsby, Met-West and Sydney regions. In 1995 the club brought the two streams of Hawks and Kookas together to form a single U/17 side. Scott Fraser was the coach and amongst his team mates in that year were his still great friends, Rod Frost, Ryan Madden, Jonathan Lee and Ben Physick. Perhaps the coach said it all that year when he wrote “Jason is one of those special players who knows how to inspire those around him. His enthusiasm and love of the game, coupled with his boundless skills, will see him go a long way.”

Senior football beckoned in 1996 when David Grace, who Jason spoke of in glowing terms during our interview, began to further mould the direction of where his life in football would end up. Gracey took the U/18 Falcons into a Grand Final, only to go down by five points to Pennant Hills. Best team man was one Jason Duss, who also made his debut at First Grade level playing three games in that same year. The Premiership did come for Dussy in ’97 however when Les Jarjoura’s Under 18’s comprehensively beat the Hunter at Wagener Oval, exactly two weeks after Princess Di’s death in Paris. Just to give you a gauge on how long ago that was!!

By now Jason was only eligible for senior football and his keenness to be involved around the club actually increased beyond a level that was already pretty high. Although those recently arrived members and supporters to the Club may now only associate him with Reserve Grade football, that was not the case when he was at the peak of his profession. He passed the 200 game milestone in 1999 and it wasn’t to be until 2002 that he would be selected for his first ever game of Ressies football with the East Coast Eagles, following their year 2000 identity change from the Baulkham Hills AFC.

Across the next three years he was selected in a handful of First Grade games, but in the main he played Reserve Grade football, perhaps one might argue, positioning himself for his future coaching role.  In 2006, Jay (he had now met Liz) hung up his First Grade boots after 104 games, but settled in for a long run with the Reserves. A Premiership was won under Luke Fulton-Tindale coaching and when Luke returned to Melbourne, Dussy was invited to take over the reins and then proceeded to win two more Premierships in 07 & 08 and were beaten Grand Finalists in 2009. An excellent leadership record indeed.

Away from his second home at Bruce Purser Reserve, Jason, like Liz, is a school teacher. Perhaps teaching Swiss to the masses? He’s not quite sure just how he became an Essendon supporter, but is happy that he is and enjoys nothing more than watching live Bomber games ensconced in his “man cave” (ask Liz) whilst sipping on a few rums.

Footy trips are less eventful when Dussy doesn’t go. He’s been on a few over the years with perhaps the most memorable being Melbourne, 2001. As the accompanying photo shows it was indeed lucky that he, Tim Physick and Dean Nankivell had the foresight to each purchase a new Sherrin before asking a helpful German tourist to take their picture in Lonsdale Street, just up from what was then Colonial Stadium.

The Eagles and the Falcons are fortunate to have had Jason Duss as a member of their Club since the little Swiss kid decided he wanted to become an AFL star. And a true champion he has been and we very warmly congratulate him on his 400th Club game, 104 of which have been in First Grade, 135 at Reserves level and 39 in the U/18’s, with the balance as a junior with the Falcons.

We also take this opportunity to recognise the only other players who have notched up 300+ Club games.

Steve Merkel                 379

Luke McLeod                375

Scott Abercrombie        362 (retired 2004)

Rodney Frost                337

Tim Physick                  335

Jason Crawford             301 (retired 2002)

Note: Club games are defined as all matches played with the East Coast Eagles and the Baulkham Hills juniors. East Coast have now discontinued this accumulation record, however we still do recognise such milestones for those players who played with ECE prior to 2008.

In round 6 of the AFL Sydney, Campbelltown travelled to Bruce Purser Reserve and defeated the East Coast Eagles. The loss hurt the Eagles and on the return leg over the weekend, they were keen to reverse the outcome. A comprehensive 21.19 (145) to 2.3 (15) victory ensured the Eagles completed this task with ruthless efficiency.

The Eagles welcomed a host of inclusions into the side, including premier midfielder Shane Ryan for the round 16 clash. It was however Mike Beardsley (pictured) and Steve O’Connor who took the game by the scruff of the neck to earn joint Best on Ground honours with Beardsley voted Players’ Player also.

Blustery conditions meant shooting for goal was a more daunting task that usual, and the Eagles managed only three goals from 10 scoring shots in the first quarter. Young gun Jack Dimery, back from his duties at Team GWS was providing penetrating run from the half back line on the vast Monarch Oval.

The second quarter continued in a similar vein to the first, with the Eagles controlling the play. Campbelltown managed their first goal as an unchecked Blues player took an uncontested mark and converted from directly in front. However the majority of play was directed at the high school end as the Eagles got their kicking boots on, including Jamie Vlatko who was well on his way to an 8 goal haul which reinstates him as the League’s leading goal kicker to date. He spent the last quarter starting in the goal square with fellow veterans Mark Goodey and Damien Charleston who also managed three goals between them.

As in the first half, East Coast dominated play in the second, slamming through another 13 goals to one to complete the 130-point victory. The Eagles had the ascendency in all areas of the ground, with the backline free to run off and create play further up the ground, while still maintaining solid defensive work when required. Scott Pierce continues to impress with his steadfast defensive skills. Ryan Fitton, Beardsley and O’Connor dominated their smaller, younger opponents through the middle and racked up plenty of possessions.

The Eagles take on Wollongong at 2.10pm at Bruce Purser Reserve next Saturday, August 14.

Division One

In another tough day for the Division One boys, the UTS Bats were far too good for the Eagles at Trumper Park. The visitors managed 2 goals in the first quarter but the game was almost out of their reach as the irrepressible Bats put 7.1 on the scoreboard. The Eagles could only manage one more for the day in the third quarter while UTS finished the day with an accurate 24.9 on the historic ground. Luke McLeod lead from the front, kicking two of the Eagles’ three goals and taking out both the Best on Ground and Players’ Player awards.

UTS Bats       7.1     12.4    15.7    24.9 (153)

Division Three

Both Campbelltown and the Eagles looked to be struggling to put a team on the field in the lead up to this match, however after a few frantic phone calls a match was under way. The Eagles will be ruing missed opportunities as they finished the day with one more scoring shot than Campbelltown but 14 points adrift.

Campbelltown           3.1     5.6     7.8     8.9 (57)

Premier Cup

In a match that was to be mirrored later in the day, the Eagles ran away with an emphatic victory over Campbelltown. The East Coast youngsters put 19 goals past the undermanned Campbelltown side and conceded just the two. Damon Steer was the spearhead up forward, finishing with four goals to his name before his day finished prematurely with a shoulder injury in the third quarter. In a game where the Eagles had winners all over the park, Nathan Campbell stood out with three goals along with Marty Karafilis and Dom Killworth who also ended with three goals.

Campbelltown:         1.0     1.1     1.1     2.1 (13)

Eagles                    6.1     10.3    14.5    19.10 (124)

Challenge Cup

Peter Steer filled in with the magnets for regular Challenge Cup coach, Ryan Madden for their round 16 match against ladder leaders Penrith. Madden will be reluctant to hand the reigns over again as the Challenge Cup boys were dealt a harsh lesson by the boys from the West. The 178-point margin was made worse by the fact that the Eagles failed to bother the scorers. While the match did not go the Eagles way, Steer noted that the side most certainly did not throw in the towel at any stage, tackling and applying pressure right up until the final siren, with Adam Hutt and Tom Streat performing admirably.

Penrith:         6.6     12.12  19.16  26.22 (178)

Jason Duss

This week Jason Duss will play his 400th match for the Baulkham Hills Falcons/ East Coast Eagles. While it is generally accepted to count only matches played throughout a senior career, this is a remarkable feat from a player that was lucky to play one match, let alone 400. Everyone is encouraged to get down to Bruce Purser at 12pm this weekend and cheer on a true champion of the Club. A story on Jason’s remarkable footballing life will be published on the website later this week...

Darren Chapman - Photo Courtesy of Michael VettasThe East Coast Eagles went into their round 15 match against North Shore with mixed form over recent weeks. Two losses in the past three matches had the Eagles potentially dropping out of the top three and forfeiting the second chance come finals time. North Shore entered the match with similar recent form, and both teams knew the winner would take poll position in the race for the second chance.

Windy conditions and a centre wicket that held more resemblance to a mud bath greeted the players as they entered the field, and by the end of the first quarter, the Eagles enjoyed only a slender advantage, despite controlling the majority of play. Darren Chapman (pictured) was relishing his opportunity to play forward, bagging one goal and attracting plenty of the football. The blustery conditions were causing havoc for most players in front of goal with the Eagles forwards kicking 2.5 to the Bombers 2.1.

The inclusion of big men Steve O’Connor and Anthony Stubbs gave the Eagles some more flexibility in the ruck and the on-ball brigade took full advantage. Scientists have been working hard lately, and have managed to clone Daniel Spiteri, the young rover seemingly in two places at once, racking up a career high 38 disposals including a classic ‘speccie’ mark on center wing and a freakish goal from the left forward pocket of the Commercial Rd end of Bruce Purser Reserve.

The Bombers were held goalless in the second term, and managed just one goal during the second half. The Eagles backline has earned a reputation as a dour group and was again so, led by Steve Merkel and Kristian Pearson who repelled many North Shore advances as well as pushing forward to create opportunities further up the ground. Damien Charleston played his first match since dislocating his knee in round 4, and the experienced utility showed that he will be an exciting addition to the team in any area of the ground.

While the windy conditions hampered the goal kicking prowess of the likes of Jamie Vlatko and Ben Rogers, the Eagles managed to secure the comfortable 50-point win – 10.17 77 to North Shore 3.9 27. The Bombers will not be deterred, and will be a tough opponent come finals time, should the two teams cross paths. However, for now, the Eagles will be looking to keep hold of third spot and build up their form for the first final in four weeks time.

Division One

The Division One team took the field against North Shore with their Captain Tim Physick back on the park for the first time since Round 1. Physick started the match at full forward and was in the game straight away, kicking the Eagles’ first goal and taking a number of trademark grabs to give him the ideal start to his comeback. With scores level at quarter time, the Eagles supporters were hopeful of a long awaited win for the Divvy 1 boys, however, North Shore had their noses in front by the main break and maintained their buffer to take a 16 point win.

East Coast Eagles     2.1     4.3     6.4     7.5 (47)

North Shore             2.1     5.4     8.5     9.9 (63)

Division Three

The Division Three boys took on Sydney Uni for the second time in as many weeks, and were keen for a repeat of their convincing win the previous week. It was not to be however and the Eagles only managed a goal in the first and last quarters, conceding 8 to the Students. Liam Madden and Hayden Benger were in form for the Eagles.

East Coast Eagles     1.1     1.2     1.4     2.8 (20)

Sydney University     2.0     5.4     6.9     8.10 (58)

Premier Cup Under 18

The Premier Cup Colts were in a battle for top spot against North Shore. The Eagles went in on top of the ladder, however a loss would allow North Shore to leapfrog the Eagles. A strong first quarter saw the Eagles lead by 10 points, however a six goal to two second half gave the Bombers the ascendency at half time. Another six goals to four in the second half handed the Bombers the victory. Peter Steers young charges will need to regroup as they approach the finals. An opportunity beckons for this young group if they can bring their A-game each week.

East Coast Eagles     2.1     4.1     6.3     8.6 (54)

North Shore             0.3     6.5     9.7     12.7 (79)

Challenge Cup

The Challenge Cup Colts managed to equal their best season tally on the weekend, notching up their fourth win for the year and placing them just one win outside of the finals race. Daniel Hoy warmed the crowd with a classic specie to cap off his best on ground performance. The team will be looking for a few more wins in the last three matches to grab a place in the finals. However it will not be an easy run home, playing both the top two teams in the next fortnight. There’s no better time for an upset!

East Coast Eagles     2.6     6.11    9.14    13.17 (95)
