Club Champion Night to be held at the Castle Hill RSL on Saturday October 23. Put it in your diary!
To commemorate and remember last year’s Premiership, Michael Vettas from www.saflphotos.com.au has produced an outstanding “coffee table” quality book on the season as it unfolded for the Eagles in 2009.
It has a retail price of $119.95 and copies are available right now for purchase. Many books have already been ordered and the date for the final print run is nearing. Should you be interested and want to review the quality of the book, you can do so by clicking here.
This page on Michael’s website also has links for the ordering process and we encourage you to consider a purchase to remember the historical year that was 2009 for the East Coast Eagles.
The various tipping competitions around Sydney had East Coast as favourite for their Round 6 match against Campbelltown at the fabulous Bruce Purser Reserve. However there was always going to be a degree of uncertainty in the home camp, given that the Blues had enjoyed a good win in the equivalent match last year. Whilst the Eagles went on to take the Premiership, Campbelltown’s game plan in 2009 was such that it matched that of the local side.
And indeed it happened again in 2010. A superior running game from the visitors, dreadfully inaccurate kicking from the Eagles along with some basic undisciplined actions, gave Campbelltown a 20 point victory. East Coast had plenty of inside 50’s, but failed to take the advantage when it was needed. Their key forwards Dugmore and Vlatko, who have been so exact in weeks gone by, kicked 6.12 between them. And therein lies much of the story ….
Best for the Eagles was centreman Shane Ryan who worked hard in the middle, continually driving the ball forward. The midfielders were working against the odds with former SANFL ruckman and Blues coach Radlee Moller controlling the centre bounces, but Ryan and Fitton applied the pressure using their bodies effectively against the odds.
Ben Physick maintained his recent excellent form keeping his match up to just the one goal, while Ben Rogers roamed down from the wing on numerous occasions to slot through two goals in a welcome return to form. Mike Beardsley, Shane Ryan and the heavily targeted Daniel Spiteri shared the Players’ Player honours. Darren Chapman, playing his 100th senior game for the Eagles, was always reliable across the half back line.
Next week sees the Eagles take on the League leaders North Shore Bombers in a crucial match. The Bombers suffered their first defeat this weekend at the hands of Western Suburbs which has made it very cluttered at the top of the ladder. Such is the even nature of the Premier Division this year, a win to the Eagles could see them take over top position on the table, while a loss could see them drop out of the five altogether.

The Under 18 Premier Cup side will unfortunately miss out on a match this weekend, due to the forfeit of the Campbelltown side. The team was due to play at 12pm on Saturday. Coach Peter Steer still expects every player from the Premier Cup side to be at Bruce Purser as usual firstly to cheer on Challenge Cup who will be playing Moorebank Sports at 10am, and then for a training session at 12pm. Players are asked to bring a training jumper as well as mouth guards, as they will be playing a scratch match. All under 18 players are encouraged to stick around afterwards to support the senior grades and help out in the canteen or BBQ as required.
All senior games are as scheduled:
Division 3 v Campbelltown @ 2pm
Premier Division v Campbelltown @ 4.10pm
Division 1 v UTS @ 7pm
We are also still very light on for volunteers and too much is being done by too few. Please could parents, wives, girlfriends brothers and sisters make the time to volunteer in the canteen or around the ground on the weekend. See Tammy Moeller on Saturday (if you can catch her as she does a million jobs) and she will no doubt have a task for you. If you can't find Tammy, simply let the girls at the canteen know. It won't take up your whole day and you will be helping the club greatly.
