Welcome to the Official Home of the East Coast Eagles

From left. Jamie, Peter & Jon Vlatko - Photo courtesy Michael VettasThe top of the AFL Sydney ladder had become very congested in recent weeks following some upset results and considerable improvement in many teams. East Coast’s round 7 match against the North Shore Bombers loomed as the most crucial game of the season to date for the Eagles. A loss would see the reigning Premiers drop right out of the final five, whilst a win had the potential to take them to the top of the ladder.

The Eagles needed to travel to Gore Hill to sort out their future with North Shore. The Bombers had been the benchmarks for the season so far with just the one loss and were primed to take on East Coast who they beat in this same game last year. Bomber coach, Rohan Graham would have wanted nothing more than to defeat his old club where he had coached for three years.

Overnight and early morning rain had made conditions heavy, but both sides handled the ball well and a very fast and free flowing game resulted. North Shore had their first goal on the board after just 19 seconds and things looked ominous for the visitors. But it wasn’t to be too long before the middle Vlatko took control down forward. It had been a proud moment just minutes earlier when the three Vlatko brothers ran out to play in their first ever senior game together. Oldest and the Captain Jon playing his 87th, youngest Peter making his debut and Jamie playing his 7th, and already warming to early favouritism for Club Champion honours.

Contrary to last week, the Eagles were deadly accurate in front of goals, which in turn applied the scoreboard pressure to wear down the opposition. Apart from that first Bomber goal, East Coast weren’t headed all day. Michael Beardsley and  Co made sure it stayed that way as together with the old “Ryan & Fitton” combination, they controlled the midfield to give the Eagles considerable drive into the forward 50. Special mention must be given to Peter Vlatko in his debut. As nervous as one could be, Pete fluffed a few touches early, but when he settled and adjusted to the pace of the game, his contribution to the victory was immense.

The nine point winning margin took the Eagles to top spot, but it was only for Saturday night, as the round wasn’t to be completed until Sunday. Arch rivals and near neighbours, Pennant Hills then did the right thing in convincingly defeating Western Suburbs and making the equation complete for East Coast to sit on top of the ladder, clear of North Shore on percentage.

The scene is now set for a block buster day & night next Saturday (May 29th) in the traditional “Back to Baulko” clash between East Coast and Pennant Hills at Rouse Hill.  Now firmly established on the calendar as ‘the must see match’ for supporters of both clubs, the Premier Division game gets underway beneath the magnificent Bruce Purser lights at 6.10pm.

'The Year of the Eagle' by Michael VettasTo commemorate and remember last year’s Premiership, Michael Vettas from www.saflphotos.com.au has produced an outstanding “coffee table” quality book on the season as it unfolded for the Eagles in 2009.

It has a retail price of $119.95 and copies are available right now for purchase. Many books have already been ordered and the date for the final print run is nearing. Should you be interested and want to review the quality of the book, you can do so by clicking here.
This page on Michael’s website also has links for the ordering process and we encourage you to consider a purchase to remember the historical year that was 2009 for the East Coast Eagles.

Gus & Laura are delighted to announce the arrival of Mac Seebeck, born Royal North Shore at 11.55am Friday May 21st 2010.

Mac is a strapping lad, weighing in at 9lb 10 ozs and 54 cms in length.

Mum was super quick in delivery and Gus is over the moon about a future Eagle for the Club.

Shane Ryan - Picture courtesy of Michael Vettas The various tipping competitions around Sydney had East Coast as favourite for their Round 6 match against Campbelltown at the fabulous Bruce Purser Reserve. However there was always going to be a degree of uncertainty in the home camp, given that the Blues had enjoyed a good win in the equivalent match last year. Whilst the Eagles went on to take the Premiership, Campbelltown’s game plan in 2009 was such that it matched that of the local side.

And indeed it happened again in 2010. A superior running game from the visitors, dreadfully inaccurate kicking from the Eagles along with some basic undisciplined actions, gave Campbelltown a 20 point victory. East Coast had plenty of inside 50’s, but failed to take the advantage when it was needed. Their key forwards Dugmore and Vlatko, who have been so exact in weeks gone by, kicked 6.12 between them. And therein lies much of the story ….

Best for the Eagles was centreman Shane Ryan who worked hard in the middle, continually driving the ball forward. The midfielders were working against the odds with former SANFL ruckman and Blues coach Radlee Moller controlling the centre bounces, but Ryan and Fitton applied the pressure using their bodies effectively against the odds.

Ben Physick maintained his recent excellent form keeping his match up to just the one goal, while Ben Rogers roamed down from the wing on numerous occasions to slot through two goals in a welcome return to form. Mike Beardsley, Shane Ryan and the heavily targeted Daniel Spiteri shared the Players’ Player honours. Darren Chapman, playing his 100th senior game for the Eagles, was always reliable across the half back line.

Next week sees the Eagles take on the League leaders North Shore Bombers in a crucial match. The Bombers suffered their first defeat this weekend at the hands of Western Suburbs which has made it very cluttered at the top of the ladder. Such is the even nature of the Premier Division this year, a win to the Eagles could see them take over top position on the table, while a loss could see them drop out of the five altogether.
