Welcome to the Official Home of the East Coast Eagles

Daniel Spiteri in full flight - Photo courtesy Michael VettasThe threatened rain did not arrive at Rouse Hill on Saturday, but a switched on East Coast Eagles team certainly did. Given a great lead in by the U/18’s who had run rampant over St George, the senior side continued in the same vein winning by 90 points. Star forward Jamie Vlatko who has been in sensational form, dropped out of the selected side after straining a hamstring during the week. However his absence opened the way for Peter Dugmore to take up the running against his former team mates and he responded well with four goals under severe pressure. Scott Pierce was also brought into the side to make his First Grade debut.

The first quarter was a tough uncompromising 30 minutes with the Dragons throwing everything at the Eagles in a fast and highly skilful display under lights at Bruce Purser Reserve. Although East Coast went further ahead in the second quarter, the scoreboard didn’t represent their superiority around the ground. St George kept hanging in there and the home side couldn’t break clear, but it did look like it would only be a matter of time.

The star of the night in the first half was 18 year old Daniel Spiteri. “Boonie” was in scintillating form as he patrolled all over the ground, gaining possessions at will. His ball handling belied his age and he went into the rooms at halftime to ponder just how he could do better in the second half. And of course he did, showing enormous courage as he fought tooth and nail against bigger and older opponents. His performance won him the accolades of coaches and players to win everything by way of individual awards in the match.

Led by Spiteri, East Coast blitzed the Dragons in the second half as they clinically and systematically destroyed a gallant St George. Rookie Michael Clinch enjoyed his best senior game, while former Subiaco star Ryan Silvester was all class in the midfield. Steve O’Connor warmed the hands and hearts of supporters with the mark of the year at full forward as he climbed high above his opponent to take a spectacular grab and then kick truly straight over the goal umpire’s hat.

The six goals to the Eagles in each of the third and fourth quarters underlined the difference between the two sides. Although the cold night air brought the dew to the grass, the Eagles were unperturbed with their skill level and ball handling actually improving as the game wore on.  At the final siren, like the moon high in the eastern sky, St George had been well and truly eclipsed.

Next Saturday July 3rd, sees the Eagles at Sydney Uni for vital top of the table clashes in both Premier Division and U/18’s.

The Division One lads struggled against a stronger Macquarie Uni combination, going down by 75 points. James Mann took the honours as best player and Players’ Player and it was great to see that he donated both awards to the Cancer Council’s “Call to Arms” appeal which the East Coast Eagles were supporting in Round 11.

Sean Streat’s Division Three side faced a key match up against Macquarie Uni who were neck and neck with the Eagles in the contest to assume 5th position. A great first and last quarter were not enough however to overcome the poor middle quarters when the Warriors ran away with the game. Sam Brotherston put in his best showing for the season, while James Ford was strong in the centre.

Taking the prime spot of curtain raiser to the main game, the Under 18 Premier Colts were magnificent with a 58 point victory over a confident St George, thus reversing the result of the earlier R2 match. The boys led all game, going further ahead each quarter as Campbell Ford and Daniel Lim gave their forward line an arm chair ride. Ethan Barclay made the most of the opportunities with five goals.

In an entertaining U/18 Challenge Cup game, the Eagles were not quite good enough to stay with Macquarie Uni, eventually taking a loss by 37 points. Blake Russell and Angus Baird were amongst the best for East Coast.

Jamie Vlatko - Picture courtesy of Michael VettasThe East Coast Eagles arrived at the Village Green within the Uni of NSW complex on Saturday, most wary of last year’s Grand Final opponents. Although 2010 wasn’t looking good for the Bulldogs, any side playing at their own home ground can’t be underestimated. Injuries had again struck hard at the Hills based Eagles, however they did welcome back skipper Jon Vlatko following his recovery from a hamstring strain.

And although Jon made a great return, it was his brother Jamie who stole the limelight with a devastating performance kicking nine goals without a miss. Vlatko was dominant in the first quarter, kicking four in a 10 minute purple patch and it took former Swans star Troy Luff to be moved onto him in an attempt to stem the flow.

The 37 point margin at ¼ time conjured up memories of last year’s rout at the same ground when the Eagles won by 100 points, but it was not to be. The Bulldogs scratched their way back into the game in the second quarter to kick seven goals with the breeze whilst the Eagles kept them honest with just three.

After halftime, with the wind at their backs, East Coast supporters expected something similar to the first quarter but the Dogs played a brilliant tactical game to totally restrict any attacking moves the Eagles attempted. At ¾ time the home side had put themselves in a terrific position to go on and take a well earned victory.

But spectators underestimated the Eagles’ determination which, along with a surprising drop in the breeze, allowed East Coast to totally dominate the last quarter.  Glenn Garner made some key positional changes which clicked, Mark Goodey kicked the first goal inside 20 seconds, Vlatko kicked his ninth and suddenly it was all over. East Coast had run away with a win that was expected, but was hard fought across the day.

Matty Power - Pic courtesy Mark SpiteriThe June long weekend saw the Eagles’ Premier Division have a week’s break to allow for Representative games to be played in Melbourne and Wagga Wagga. However the Round 9 washed out games in all other Divisions went ahead on a delightful Sydney weekend.

Down in Wollongong, Division One took an unexpected hit when they went down to the Lions by 32 points. Ash Moeller showed his class with six goals and a best on ground effort, while Etiosa Okunbor took the Players’ Player honours.

Wollongong
     2.0     6.3     12.3    16.6 (102)
East Coast      3.5     6.7     7.9      10.10 (70)
Goal Kickers: Ash Moeller 6, Alex Foxall 2, Sean Albert 2
Best Players:

The early game in the Gong saw the Under 18 Premier Cup side avenge last year’s finals defeat with a comprehensive 90 point victory over Wollongong. The scale of the win has vastly improved the side’s percentage, which had been lacking, and although they have only played six matches for the season, Peter Steer’s lads sit comfortably in 3rd position on the ladder. Dean Costello showed the benefit of his First Grade experience with a fabulous around the ground effort.

Wollongong

East Coast’s Division Three side fronted up at Gipps Road on a chilly Saturday morning to take on Holroyd-Parramatta. Eager to get the warmth in their bones, the Eagles confronted the Goannas with a superb running game and by half time the 62 point margin suggested that the game was all but over. Tim Coakley kicked six goals from centre half forward and was the star of the day, but he only just tipped out the burly Phil Ragno who slotted through five from full forward.
Still with one postponed game in hand against 9th placed Sydney Uni, the Eagles are just outside the five, but a good win there could see them jump to second possie, such is the congested nature at the top of the ladder.

Holroyd-Parramatta
1.0      1.2      4.3      7.5 (47)
East Coast

Up at Bensons Lane, where it was no doubt colder than anywhere else, East Coast’s U/18 Challenge Cup side gamefully battled the Southern Power lads. After a slow start, the Eagles turned the second half into a contest, but the final score still showed a 63 point win to the visitors. Blake Russell and Nathan Lee were the best for the home side.

East Coast
0.1       0.1       3.2       4.5 (29)

AFL Sydney v the VAFA
The AFL Sydney travelled to Elsternwick Park in south-east Melbourne to take on the Victorian Amateurs. The Big V had defeated Sydney by less than a kick in 2008 and the Two-Blues of Sydney were keen for revenge. East Coast was well represented with six Eagles making the trip, more than any other Sydney club.
The match, played in greasy conditions and under leaden skies, started well with Alex Lee from Sydney University and Damien Bowles kicking early goals. However the Victorians managed to take a 10 point lead into the first break. This was extended to 17 at halftime, although the Sydney team were confident that their younger legs could carry them through the match better than those of the Victorians.
This was not to be the case however, with the hosts proving far too slick in the second half. Impressive ball movement by hand and foot through the middle of the ground by the Vics was finished off with some exceptional contested marking in the forward line. In contrast the Sydney team won a lot of ball across half back but constant turnovers and imprecise kicking into the forward line hampered their efforts to maintain scoreboard pressure.
For the Eagles, all six players contributed, with Daniel Spiteri, Shane Ryan and Damien Bowles doing a lot of the grunt work in the middle while Ryan Silvester used his polished finish to set up a number of plays. Jamie Vlatko had a tough day against quality opposition and poor delivery, but showed that he is very comfortable at that level. Rowan Bilkey played his usual role, sweeping across half back and was one of the few that consistently found their targets with his disposal.
Congratulations to all six players for their efforts over the weekend.
Victorian Amateurs           4.1   7.4   14.10   20.11 (131)

NSW REGIONAL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
AFL Sydney are the State Champions after the Development squad defeated the Black Diamond AFL in the final of the NSW Regional State Championships at Wagga Wagga on Sunday.
The early “round robin” results from Saturday show that after a sluggish start against Farrer, the Sydney boys really hit their straps when they knocked over the strong Riverina League in a thriller. An easy victory over the Black Diamond League (from Newcastle & the Central Coast) saw them through to the final on Sunday where they would again meet the BDL.

It was to be no contest in the end as Sydney ran away to win by 50 points. Good to see East Coast’s Ben Rogers kick goals (total six) in every game and be named in the best on three of four occasions.  Trent Baker bagged a couple in the final as well and contributed strongly in every game.

Damien Bowles and Ben Rogers

The East Coast Eagles are well represented in the two sides picked to represent AFL Sydney in this weekend's fixtures in Melbourne and Wagga. The senior side will travel to Melbourne to take on the Victorian Amateurs while the Development Squad will head to Wagga to take part in the Country Championships.

Of the 8 Eagles selected, 6 are in the senior side, more than any other club, while Ben Rogers and Trent Baker will play in the development squad. Ben Rogers was named as vice-captain while North Shore's Lachlan Prior will captain the young side.

In the senior side, Shane Ryan, Jamie Vlatko, Ryan Silvester, Rowan Bilkey, Damien Bowles and Daniel Spiteri will make the trip to Melbourne with Damien Bowles also receiving the honour of being named vice captain to St George's Declan Donohue.

The AFL Sydney team is a mixture of youth and experience and coach Leigh Forsyth is excited about the challenge ahead "I can't wait for Sunday, the side has now been picked and I believe we have a very good side capable of a good result" Forsyth said.

The match will be played at Elsternwick Park on Sunday commencing at 1.15pm.
