Welcome to the Official Home of the East Coast Eagles

Damien Charleston - Picture courtesy of Michael VettasWhen the East Coast Eagles were formed in 2000, the club had not one married player, let alone any player parent. Time marches on however, things change and on Fathers’ Day in 2010 lots of little Eagles watched proudly as their Dads went about taking the next step to put East Coast a little closer to successive Premierships.

The first semi-final saw yet another encounter between fierce rivals East Coast and Pennant Hills. Their last had only been two weeks earlier in the final home and away match which the Demons won, thus giving them a positive lead in to assumed success in the semi-final. But it was not to be as they were defeated by an East Coast side totally committed to victory. Stung by last week’s defeat in the qualifying final, coach Glenn Garner had made some tough calls in team selection on Thursday night. Missing out were Scott Pierce, Peter Vlatko and Ben Rogers who were replaced by Kieran McRedmond, Peter Dugmore and Ryan Silvester, all returning from injury.

Both sides were confronted by strong and swirly winds at Blacktown Olympic Park with a five goal breeze blowing to the right of screen at the Eastern Road end. Pennant Hills won the toss and took the advantage and although they were well held for the first 18 minutes, the Demons kicked away with four late quarter goals to take a handy lead at quarter time.

Expectations were high in the Eagle camp that they too would benefit from the breeze in the second. East Coast finished up dominating this quarter to take a five point lead going into the long break. Pennant Hills failed to score in this quarter and in fact the ball did not go into their forward 50 once, such was the determination of the Eagles to regain the lead.

The third quarter would be the key to the result and although the Demons had the wind they did not secure the lead that they would have been looking for. East Coast attacked incessantly by looping the ball along the wings and deep into the forward line where Mark Goodey happily kicked two of his four for the match. Jamie Vlatko looked to be back to his best with brilliant overhead marking and accurate kicking for goal. Most people figured that Pennant Hills’ five point lead at ¾ time would not be enough for them to sustain against a side coming home with the breeze.

An epic last quarter however saw both sides fight it out to the death. The Demons kicked two against the breeze, whilst the Eagles with numerous players on the bench injured, kicked four with the sealer coming from an unlikely source when Jack Dimery wandered forward and nailed one home from 45 metres. Once again the margin at the end of this quarter when the final siren went was five points. Numerically, nothing separated the two sides after half time.

Justin Steer easily played his best game across halfback and was a standout for the day. The ‘Golden Fist’ Damien Charleston showed just how much he was missed during 12 weeks of injury, as he roamed unchecked all over the ground picking up possessions at will.

Next Sunday September 12th at 2.15pm sees East Coast again meet Western Suburbs who were beaten in this week’s second semi-final. The winner of this match at Blacktown will win the prized spot through to the Grand Final against Sydney Uni on Sept 18th.

The Under 18 Premier Cup team met Sydney Uni in the second semi-final on Saturday in wet and difficult conditions at Bruce Purser Reserve, with the winner of the match getting a week off and a ticket straight to the Grand Final.

The breeze was favouring the southern end and the Eagles failed to capitalise on its use in the first quarter. However Sydney Uni certainly did in the second, kicking away to a 40 point margin by half time. A strong third term was needed and the Eagles did play their best football in this quarter to still remain in the game, although they had it all in front of them from this point on.

Unable to reel in the opposition in the last, East Coast did however keep the pedal down and were led strongly by Campbell Ford, Jesse Clark and Daniel Lim.

The result was a second chance to qualify for the big one when they meet North Shore in the Preliminary Final next Sunday, September 12th at Blacktown.

Update on Marty Karafilis
; Marty remains in Westmead Hospital with a small fracture to his skull and internal bleeding in the brain, which is being monitored daily with CT scans. He is in good spirits despite receiving the news that sport of any kind is out of the question for the next six months. Hopefully we will see Marty out at the game on Sunday to lend his support to his U/18 team mates in their quest for Grand Final honours.

Ryan Fitton was everybodys favourite on Saturday - Photo courtesy of Michael VettasEast Coast were beaten by a better side on the day when they went down to Western Suburbs in last Saturday’s qualifying final in the AFL Sydney Premier League. The Magpies had five goals on the board inside 20 minutes of the first quarter and from that moment on it was always going to be “catch up football” for the Eagles.

After that initial onslaught, East Coast limited the damage quite effectively during the balance of the first quarter and all of the second, to go into the long break just 10 points shy of the Magpies. The Eagles had rediscovered their running game and were applying pressure to Wests where they were vulnerable.
However the halftime break didn’t help the Hills based side as it stopped their momentum build-up, which was not to return for the third quarter. The Magpies systematically destroyed the Eagles in this vital term kicking seven goals to just the solitary one in reply. Although the Eagles won the last quarter, the damage had been done and even the most optimistic Eagles’ supporter could not anticipate a miraculous last quarter comeback.
Ryan Fitton was easily East Coast’s best player in the midfield and he was courage personified, as he contributed brilliantly in a magnificent running game. Ben Physick at full back, was once again assigned the task of minding the League’s leading goalkicker, Wests Matthew Eurell who did not kick a goal for the game.
However the Eagles had secured the double chance in the finals by virtue of finishing third and their loss now sets up yet another classic encounter with Pennant Hills next Sunday Sept 5th at Blacktown Olympic Park in the first semi-final at 2.15pm. The winner of this match stays in the race for the Premiership whilst the loser can begin to plan for next season.
A reminder for local fans is that the Eagles U/18 Premier Cup team will be in action at Bruce Purser Reserve next Saturday Sept 4th, when they take on Sydney Uni at 10.00am in the 2nd semi-final. The winner of this match goes directly to the Grand Final.

Then, why not continue with your “local footy fix” the following day out at Blacktown and lend your support to the Eagles in their quest to continue to remain in playoff contention in the Premier League.

Joker Poker

Congratulations to Jon Gawley on picking the Joker. Jon walked away with the $850 jackpot last Thursday after successfully turning over the Joker. This was a good outcome, as Jon purchased multiple tickets from Trev each week. Well done JG.

Daniel Spiteri sets the pace yet again. Picture courtesy of Michael Vettas With the order of teams for the AFL Sydney Premier League finals series already locked in, the outcome of matches in the last home and away round on Saturday meant nothing in terms of results. However for some, there were bragging rights. Which was the case at Ern Holmes Oval when the East Coast Eagles took on Pennant Hills to compete for the coveted Warren “Pops” Quintrell Shield.

This match took on further significance for the Pennant Hills Club as it was to be the last ever match played at the ground which had been their home for more than 35 years. From 2011 onwards, the Demons home ground will be at Mike Kenny Oval in Cherrybrook. The fact that arch rivals East Coast Eagles would be their opponents increased the anticipation for supporters of both sides. Pennant Hills wanted to win their last ever home game at “The Ern” and the Eagles definitely wanted to spoil the party.
However in a highly entertaining game, the lower ranked “Penno” eventually took the honours by 27 points. The Demons took an early lead with the first two goals and were not to surrender that advantage all day. At halftime it looked as though they would win going away, but a terrific six goal third quarter from the Eagles saw the margin reduced to just 13 points at the final break. The scene was set for an epic last quarter.
And it was, with East Coast creeping to within one kick, but the never say die determination of a side playing its last game at their spiritual home saw Pennant Hills kick three late goals in the final few minutes to make the margin bigger than what the game deserved. The better side won, but it certainly set up a classic encounter should these two teams meet in the finals.
Once again, for the fifth time in almost as many matches, 19 year old Daniel Spiteri was best on the ground for the Eagles. His form going into the finals is explosive and he will be a key component of the East Coast game plan in their quest for back to back Premierships.
The Eagles take on Western Suburbs in the Qualification Final at Blacktown Olympic Park next Saturday August 28th at 2.15pm. East Coast will welcome back a myriad of players who were given the opportunity to rest niggling injuries in the final minor round game. Each side has beaten the other once during the season and a classic match will be assured.
Pennant Hills           5.3     9.6     11.9    15.14 (104)
East Coast                3.1     4.1     10.2    12.5 (77)

Goal Kickers: Mark Goodey 4, Ben Physick 2, Jon Vlatko, Jamie Vlatko, Ben Rogers, Luke McLeod, Steve O’Connor, Daniel Spiteri

Best Players:
Daniel Spiteri, Damien Bowles, Ryan Fitton, Mike Beardsley, Mark Goodey, Kristian Pearson

Division One finished off their season with a 36 point loss to Pennant Hills.  For the first time since 2001, this side will not be playing finals football. In each of the last eight years they have always played in at least the Preliminary Final and their record of four Premierships and twice Runners Up will certainly stand the test of time for many years to come.  A quiet drink at the Tavern on Sunday caused many to reflect upon a golden era indeed.

Pennant Hills
             2.0       4.4       8.5       10.9 (69)
East Coast                 3.2       3.3       4.3       5.3 (33)
Goalkickers:    Tim Physick 3, Jason Duss, James Ford
Best Players:  David Clinch, Tim Coakley, Matt Bailey, Tim Physick, Blake Jones, Matt Power

At Division Three level this fledgling side finished off its best season since the Club decided to enter a third senior side in 2009.  Seven wins for the season was probably a few less then coach Sean Streat would have liked, but I’m sure he will take that as a significant sign of improvement. Inaccurate kicking for goal was the only reason for their defeat on Saturday.
Pennant Hills             2.0       3.3       5.4       9.4 (58)
East Coast                 1.7       4.8       5.12     5.13 (43)
Goalkickers:    Phil Ragno 3, James Ford, Tim Kear
Best Players:  Josh Lawrence, Liam Madden, Brent Trewin, Chad Herbert, Chris Wynne, David Barker

The U/18 Premier Cup side under Peter Steer’s tutelage now have every opportunity to make up for last year’s disappointing exit in the finals. They have finished top of the ladder by virtue of their tough victory over Pennant Hills on Saturday by three points. Thus earning the week off to await who they play in the 2nd semi-final at Bruce Purser Reserve on Saturday September 4th.  It will be either Sydney Uni or North Shore.
It has been an excellent season for these Colts and their recent form will stand them in good stead for the run through the finals in 2010.
Pennant Hills             0.1       2.4       4.7       5.10 (40)
East Coast                 1.4       2.7       4.10     5.13 (43)
Goalkickers:    Matthew Newson 2, Nathan Campbell, Michael Nance, Daniel Lim
Best Players:  Chris Polkinghorne, Aaron Savage, Dean Costello, Martin Karafilis, Jesse Clark, Michael Clinch

Ryan Madden’s U/18 Challenge Cup boys just missed out on a victory to end their 2010 season. Mac Uni proving to be too good in the end by nine points.

Macquarie Uni
           0.1       2.3       2.7       4.12 (38)

NEXT WEEK’S MATCHES – Saturday August 28th 2010
The only match involving the Eagles next week is the Qualifying Final in Premier Division when East Coast clash with Western Suburbs at 2.15pm at Blacktown Olympic Park on Saturday August 28th. The winner will qualify to meet Sydney Uni at Bruce Purser Reserve on Sept 4th in the 2nd semi-final, whilst the loser will have one more chance to stay in the finals race when they meet the winner of Sunday’s elimination final between North Shore and Pennant Hills.
The Eagles’ U/18 Premier Cup boys will play their next match at Bruce Purser on Sept 4th in the 2nd semi-final.

JOKER POKER
This week’s winning number is D104. Please see Trev Hangan at training to take your shot at uncovering the Joker. The pot is $850 and must go off before the end of the season.

Round 18 will be the last game of football in 2010 for a number of East Coast Eagles players. As such, tonight’s training session will also be the last preparation for some, while all payers are encouraged to continue training throughout September to give support to the Premier Division and Premier Cup sides in their quest for premierships.

Team photographs will be taken tonight, with Liam Madden from Madden Photography once again working his magic with the camera. All players are to wear full home playing gear to training tonight or bring it to change into after training for the photos. The photos will be conducted in two groups. The Under 18 squad will have their photo taken at the completion of their training session on the far wing of Bruce Purser Reserve, while the seniors will wait until their session is finished before having their photo taken in the middle of the ground.

All parents, partners and supports of the East Coast Eagles are invited to training tonight. There will be a BBQ on and team selections will be announced at the ground. We are hoping to have a good turnout to cheer on the team before their last home and away match in 2010.
